Class description

Narrative

The writer’s job, Nabokov wrote, is to put a character up a tree and once they are up there, throw rocks.

New for 2025, our Introduction to Stories course builds on your longform skills and enables you to link scenes together to tell the story of a specific set of characters. Over twelve weeks, you will learn to create people the audience likes and then put them through heaven and hell, just to see what they will do.

Inspired by the work of the Hideout Theatre in Austin TX, this course will also examine how genres can guide the direction of a show, helping the players make informed, enthusiastic choices, guided by inspiration, not obligation.

This course does not treat storytelling as a mystery, but simply as a way to connect and inspire great scenes. It does not teach a formula, but a state of mind. An atmosphere of curiosity and mischief in which stories naturally arise.

    • End-of-term Showcase

    You'll perform in an end-of-term showcase for friends and family on Wednesday, 2nd December at the Lantern Theatre.

    Important Notes:

  • Improvising stories is hard. Doing it too early can bring back all kinds of bad habits. We recommend that you complete our Harold course (Level 4) or equivalent before taking Narrative (Level 5).   • While we strive to maintain the advertised showcase schedule, dates are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. Refunds will not be issued in the event of a showcase date alteration.
  • Although most of our students perform at the end of their courses, all showings are optional. They are not tests or graduations; they are just a chance to do what you have been doing in class and receive the adulation of your loved ones.

    Liz Peters

    Liz is an acclaimed improviser, performer, and facilitator who brings decades of stage experience into the training room with energy, warmth, and wit. She trained as an actress at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and went on to study improvisation at the legendary iO in Chicago. Since then, she has performed across Europe and the U.S., touring with international ensembles and celebrated improv groups including The Maydays, Yes Queens, Bumper Blyton, and Scaramouche: The Improvised Rock Opera. A certified Embodied Facilitator, Liz is also the author of Own It! How to Boss Your Fears, Free Your Voice and Inspire The Room, which explores confidence, presence, and authentic communication—skills she champions in her teaching. At AndAlso, Liz brings her expertise in improvisation, physicality, and performance to corporate training sessions that unlock creativity, build confidence, and encourage dynamic expression. Her facilitation style is bold, supportive, and joyfully engaging—whether she’s helping teams communicate with clarity, connect emotionally, or navigate the unknown with confidence. Liz specialises in embodied expression—helping beginners discover their playful side, and guiding experienced professionals toward deeper presence, vocal freedom, and spontaneous creativity. She creates learning environments that feel both safe and exhilarating. Favourite improv moment: Creating a fully improvised rock opera from scratch in front of a festival audience and watching people leap to their feet at the end. A powerful reminder that taking risks together can be electrifying—and joyful.
