ANDALSO IMPROV — TERMS, CONDITIONS AND POLICIES


OUR CLASS LEVELS

The aim of our syllabus is to create improvisers with a shared skill set and vocabulary who can work together. We do not believe there is only one way to do improv, but that does not get in the way of our shared effort to improve.

We normally expect students to take classes in the order shown on our course pathway. Students with equivalent training from another school may contact us to discuss skipping a level. This decision is made at the directors’ discretion.

Students are expected to attend at least 75% of a course to perform in its showcase or progress to the next level.

We value promptness. While we understand that students have busy lives, repeated lateness may be treated as a failure to attend.

If a teacher believes that a class may not be suitable for a student’s current skill level, they will consult with the student and AndAlso to find an appropriate resolution.

We reserve the right to remove a student from a course if we believe their current skill level is significantly affecting the learning and experience of other students. Any credit or refund will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Our Experienced Player classes are for students who have completed AndAlso Levels 1–4 or equivalent training at another improv school.


TEACHER ASSIGNMENTS

While we strive to maintain consistency in our teaching team, AndAlso Improv reserves the right to substitute teachers when necessary. A change of teacher does not qualify for a refund, credit or deferral. We appreciate your understanding as we work to maintain the quality and continuity of our classes.


PRICING AND SCHOLARSHIPS

At AndAlso, we believe that money should never be a barrier to doing improv.

We have created a flexible pricing system to make our courses as accessible as possible. Course fees can be paid in instalments. If you need a different arrangement, please email hello@andalsoimprov.com and we will do what we can to help.

OUR THREE PRICE BRACKETS

  1. General Tickets

This is the standard price for our courses.

  1. Concession Tickets

Concession tickets are offered at 30% off our General Ticket price.

They are available to people on lower incomes, including, but not limited to:

  1. Students
  2. Carers
  3. NHS workers
  4. People receiving benefits
  5. Pensioners

We do not ask for documentation. Please book the ticket that is right for you. There is no limit on the number of concession tickets available for each course.

  1. Scholarship Tickets

Scholarship tickets are for people who would not otherwise be able to take part, regardless of background or circumstances.

These places are strictly limited—usually to two per course—so we ask that you consider carefully before booking.

We trust our community and do not require proof. Instead, we ask you to reflect honestly:

  1. If you can afford a concession ticket or contribute in another way, please consider doing so.
  2. Please book no more than one scholarship place per term.
  3. If no scholarship places are showing as available, please email hello@andalsoimprov.com. We may still be able to help.


A NOTE ON SCHOLARSHIP NO-SHOWS

Scholarship places are limited and in high demand. If you have booked a scholarship place and can no longer attend, please let us know before course sales close so we can offer the place to someone else.

If you book a scholarship place and do not attend without contacting us, we may be unable to offer you another scholarship in future.

We are a small team doing our best to make space for everyone who needs it. Your communication really helps us to do that.

If you are in a position to give back—whether that is after receiving a scholarship yourself or simply because you would like to help others—you can donate to support our scholarship places.

Every contribution helps someone else say “Yes, and” to improv. Let’s keep making space for each other.


CANCELLATIONS, REFUNDS AND TRANSFERS

At AndAlso, we aim to be fair, consistent and transparent. These policies explain how cancellations, transfers and refunds work so that you know your options before booking.

DROP-INS, SHOWS, JAMS AND SINGLE CLASSES

Bookings are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another date, event or account. This applies if you are unable to attend because of illness, travel disruption or a change of plans.

If you can no longer attend, you may pass your ticket to someone else. For classes, drop-ins and jams, that person must meet any experience requirements stated on the event page. They should give the original booking name when they arrive.

If AndAlso cancels the event or moves it to another date, you may choose a full refund or transfer your booking to another event.

This does not affect your statutory rights.


COURSES

  1. If you cancel more than six weeks before the course begins, you will receive a full refund minus the administration fee.
  2. If you cancel between one and six weeks before the course begins, you will receive a 50% refund minus the administration fee.
  3. If you cancel less than one week before the course begins, the full course fee remains due.


MISSED COURSE SESSIONS

Course fees cover the complete programme and secure your place within a fixed group for the duration of the course. As venue hire and teaching costs are committed in advance, we cannot offer reductions, credits or refunds for missed sessions.

We encourage students to attend as many classes as possible to get the most from the experience and support the ensemble learning process.


INTENSIVES AND RETREATS

  1. Your deposit secures your place.
  2. The remaining balance is due eight weeks before the event begins.
  3. Before the balance becomes due, your deposit may be transferred to another eligible event.
  4. If you cancel more than eight weeks before the event begins, you will receive a full refund minus the deposit.
  5. If you cancel eight weeks or less before the event begins, the full event fee remains due.
  6. You may pass your place or deposit to another person, provided they meet the stated experience requirements.


GENERAL NOTES

Other Costs

We strongly recommend booking flexible or insured travel and accommodation, particularly if you are travelling from overseas. Except where required by law, AndAlso cannot reimburse travel, accommodation or other costs associated with attending an event.

Refund Administration Fee

Where a refund is available under the relevant cancellation policy because the buyer cancels, a 10% administration fee will be deducted.

No administration fee applies if AndAlso cancels or moves the event to another date.

Transfers By The Buyer

Transfer options vary according to the type of booking and are set out in the relevant event policy above.

Drop-in, jam and single-class bookings cannot be moved to another date, event or account. Where you are permitted to pass your place to another person, they must meet any stated experience requirements.

Cancellations Or Date Changes By AndAlso

If AndAlso cancels an event or moves it to another date, we will give as much notice as possible. You may transfer your booking to another eligible event or receive a full refund.

Class And Course Suitability

It is your responsibility to check that a class or course is suitable for your experience level before booking.

If you do not meet the stated experience requirements, we may be unable to admit you and the usual cancellation and transfer policy for that booking will apply.

CLASS OBSERVATION

At AndAlso, improv works best when everyone in the room is in the room. Having non-participants watching can shift the energy, make the space feel less open and make it harder for students to take creative risks. For this reason, we do not allow observers to sit in on our regular classes or courses.

If you are curious about what improv feels like before committing, we offer free tasters designed for exactly that. They are a welcoming, low-pressure way to experience the joy of improv from the inside—and you will get much more from joining the play than watching from the sidelines.

Watching your classmates during exercises and scenes is, of course, part of the learning process. If you are a student and need a moment to pause, take a break or sit something out, that is absolutely fine. Please speak to your teacher so that they can support you.


SHOWS AND AUDIENCES


HOW ANDALSO IMPROV SHOWS WORK

We love improv and want our shows to be accessible to everyone. These guidelines help us create a safe and comfortable atmosphere for audience members and performers alike.


A NOTE ON CONTENT

Improv is spontaneous, so our shows may include adult themes.

Our performers are committed to being thoughtful and respectful, and to considering issues of content, treatment and power in every performance. While we never intend to offend, some material may not be suitable for everyone. Please keep this in mind when choosing to attend.


AGE GUIDANCE

AndAlso Improv shows are recommended for people aged 16 and over, as some performances may include mature themes or language.

Audience members under 16 are welcome at the discretion of a parent or guardian, provided that the responsible adult is comfortable with the nature of improvised comedy.

Respect The Performers

Everything you see is made up on the spot and unique to that performance, so please give our performers your attention and support.

Talking during the performance, heckling or other disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in immediate ejection and a ban from future events.

Be In The Room

Unless using a device is part of the show or necessary for access reasons, we ask you to turn off your phone and keep it in your pocket or bag.

Drink Responsibly

Anyone who is overly intoxicated may be refused entry or asked to leave.

Join In When Invited

Some of our shows invite audience interaction, from suggesting a single word to joining performers onstage. We will explain clearly when and how you can contribute.

Audience interaction is entirely voluntary. Our performers will only engage directly with people who are happy to take part. You are always welcome simply to watch and enjoy the show.

Make An Informed Choice

Our shows may contain adult content and are recommended for audience members aged 16 and over. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who acknowledges the possibility of adult material.


HEALTH, ACCESS AND CARE

At AndAlso, we look after each other—in and out of the classroom, and on and off the stage.

If you suspect that you may be infectious, please stay at home rather than attending a class or event, particularly if you have symptoms that could be passed to others.

Some members of our community, or their loved ones, may be more vulnerable to illness. We all have a part to play in keeping one another safe.

We also care deeply about mental health and wellbeing. If something is affecting your ability to take part, please speak to your teacher or email hello@andalsoimprov.com. We will always do our best to support you and make reasonable adjustments where possible.

If you have more complex access needs, we have a Support and Access form that allows you and your teacher to agree on the best ways to support you in class.

You can request this when booking by adding a note to the accessibility requirements field, or by emailing hello@andalsoimprov.com.

Alongside our regular classes, we offer online options and our Show Up & Play courses in Brighton. These are designed to be more accessible for people who experience anxiety or fatigue, or who benefit from a gentler pace and flexible participation.

The exact format is guided by participants’ needs but may include:

  1. Welcoming observation if somebody is not able to perform.
  2. Using fewer games per session, with more time for warming up and reflecting.
  3. Removing pressure to take part in high-energy performance styles.
  4. Avoiding intense emotional scenes.

We are committed to making AndAlso a space where everyone can participate comfortably, creatively and with care.


CODE OF CONDUCT AND CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS

We understand that improvisation can bring up uncomfortable or taboo material and that this may affect or trigger some people.

We will do our best to manage this thoughtfully and create an environment in which everybody can be who and how they want to be. We also recognise that it is impossible to avoid every difficult subject entirely.

We aim to create a community where honest and open conversations can be held. We aim for growth, not blame.

Our Code of Conduct covers behaviour at events and venues run directly by AndAlso, as well as electronic communications that we manage directly.

We will not tolerate prejudiced behaviour at AndAlso events, whether it relates to race, age, sex, gender, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion or belief, or any other characteristic.


RAISING A CONCERN

Staff members, audience members, students and anybody else in contact with AndAlso may report behaviour that concerns them through:

  1. The anonymous reporting form available through the Policies page on our website.
  2. Our weekly office hour, held on Fridays from 12:00–1:00pm UK time.
  3. Our external moderator.
  4. An email to the AndAlso directors.

If anyone is unhappy with how an issue has been handled, they may refer it to the directors by email or use the anonymous reporting form.

No action will be taken without the explicit permission of the person making the report, except where we have reason to believe that a crime may have been committed or where we have a legal or safeguarding obligation to act.


RESPONDING TO CONCERNS

In a class, the teacher will be responsible for arranging an initial conversation with the people involved. In other circumstances, this will be the responsibility of the directors.

A teacher may arrange a meeting with a student even if a specific complaint has not been made.

At any such meeting, the AndAlso staff member may invite one of the directors or the external moderator. Any other person involved is also welcome to bring somebody with them for support.

If the initial conversation does not resolve the issue, the concern may be escalated.

Possible measures include:

  1. A further facilitated conversation.
  2. A temporary suspension.
  3. Removal from a class.
  4. A temporary ban.
  5. A permanent ban.

These decisions will be made by the directors in consultation with the people involved.

Where we have reason to believe that a crime may have been committed, we may report the matter to the police and assist with any enquiries.

All AndAlso teachers are trained in this system and are expected to keep appropriate records. Patterns of behaviour will be reported to the directors and appropriate action will be taken.
